How to Wash Your Face the Right Way

You might read this title and wonder "is there actually a right way? I mean... soap and water, right?" Wrong.
To promote the most vibrant, healthy, and youthful looking skin, you'll want to make sure you're doing everything right. Right?
You may already use the "best of the best" facial wash, exfoliators, masks, toners, moisturizers, and serums, which is AWESOME! But wouldn't it be the pits if you were investing into your skin without using your products correctly?
To help make sure that you're using everything correctly, I've broken it down into some steps for you. These steps will help you LOVE your skin and help that pure beauty shine right through. In no time, you'll have clear, hydrated, healthier skin. Keep reading to figure out your new regimen and shop some of my favorite products to incorporate into a full at-home facial
You'll want to start with clean hands
Now, if you're like me, you might wonder "am I not cleansing my hands as I wash my face?"
Here, think about it like this. Putting soap on your hands isn't what's going to clean them, it's the act of rubbing your hands together WITH the soap that is going to remove the crud you do NOT want on your hands, let alone your face. I'd start with a prebiotic hand soap that will promote healthy bacteria to combat the nasty bacteria that can cause ruckus

Lavender Mint Prebiotic Hand Wash $14
Remove all makeup before you begin

Anti-Aging Cleansing Oil $29
Use room temperature water
Using hot water may feel super soothing, but it's also super dehydrating. If you're removing the cleansing oil shown above, get a washcloth nice and warm and gently wipe it off your skin. But when it comes time to washing and rinsing, lukewarm is best.
Give your skin a double wash
There are many benefits of double cleansing. Your skin will be smoother and the products you use to follow will absorb easier, leaving you using much less product than with a single wash. It's difficult to remove pollutants, makeup and sunscreen with a single wash because they like to get really deep in your pores. Use a cleansing oil first to remove all of the grime that sits on top of your skin, followed by a cleansing gel to suit your skin type.

Avoid sulfates in your facial cleansers
If you see sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, or ammonium laureth sulfate on the ingredients list, look for another facial cleanser. Sulfates are surfactants that are used to remove oil from the skin, but our skin is a very smart organ and makes oil for a purpose -that being healthy, radiant skin. When we remove too much oil, our skin thinks there is a deficit so it goes into over-gear. We don't need extra oils and we don't need to strip our skin of its oils, just let our natural skin do as it deems necessary.
Massage gently for 60 seconds
Just like washing your hands for 30 seconds to remove all the yuckies, we need to massage our face. We wash our hands many times a day, but our skin doesn't get that same treatment, so a longer massage is necessary. HOW we're massaging is important too. Gently massage your face AND neck in upward, circular motions to promote circulation, lymphatic drainage, relaxation, and cleanse deeply.
Pat dry with a clean towel
Our facial skin is super delicate, and prone to aging prior to the rest of our skin because it's always exposed to the elements. Take a little extra care and pat it dry with a clean and soft towel. It doesn't need to be dried completely, in fact, the products to apply after cleansing will absorb better if there's a thin layer of moisture on your skin.

Put your toner on right after washing
Once you cleanse your face, you need to apply your following products right away, otherwise the dry air will pull moisture right from your skin. You might have felt that "tightness" before, like "what did I just do to my skin?"
I like to start with a gentle toner before applying moisturizer. This prebiotic formula helps improve and restore conditions such as scars, rosacea, acne and redness anywhere on the body, while hydrating and rejuvenating.

Prebiotic Facial Mist $15
Seal it all in with a moisturizer
Moisturizers are incredibly important, as they seal in all of the products you've applied to your skin. There are many options to suit your skin-type, and your skin will thank you! You'll apply these just like when you're cleaning your skin: gentle, upward circular motions for 60 seconds.

Botanical Face Crème $30
Wash your face morning and night. We often hear that our skin is still clean from the cleansing the night before. But that’s not really the case. Overnight, our skin cells are hard at work, which means they’re secreting toxins and sebum. Wash your face in the morning to remove all that waste, and allow your daytime products to work better with your skin.
Now that you're all set up to have incredible smooth and happy skin, enjoy that fresh face!
